By God’s Grace, a Bible Mystery Revealed

A comprehensive bible study on Mark 14:51-52 (and a really good way to demonstrate how to conduct a Bible study!)

I was looking for a scripture to discuss with Lindsay Davis and Michelle Nikzad last night and this leaps off the page…

A Young Man Flees Naked – Mark 14:51-52

😳 Wait…what?

✝️ Mark 14:51-52
51 Now a certain young man followed Him, having a linen cloth thrown around his naked body. And the young men laid hold of him, 52 and he left the linen cloth and fled from them naked.

In all my studies, I’ve never noticed this verse in scripture. How did I miss this? I was perplexed, confused, and bewildered. * I’m pretty sure those adjectives all mean the same thing – but I was extra baffled so I used them all!

I mean why? Why’s this in here? This naked guy seems so, so…random?

But trust and believe- NOTHING in scripture is random. If it’s in the Bible there’s a reason. There’s ALWAYS a reason.

ALL scripture has been given to us to learn from. ALL. So if we don’t understand something- we just simply have to ASK THE HOLY SPIRIT TO GUIDE US INTO ALL TRUTH. In 2 Timothy 3:16-17 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.

(( RIGHTEOUSNESS – remember that word!))

💡 So this means there is a good reason for this naked guy and it’s in our Bible somewhere! The question is where???

So, I do what any good “wanna be Bible theologian” does…I Google it. 😂

Well dang – no good answers on google. Not even one!

Google doesn’t make us any promises BUT the Lord has made us promises!

Beautiful, beautiful promises.

We need to hold fast to those promises as we navigate through this vapor of a life. One of my favorites is Jeremiah 29:13

❤️ You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.

I stop and pray.

Dear Father;
I believe every promise you’ve made me. I love you and I am seeking you with my whole heart. Please guide me through the mystery of this verse and help me find the deeper meaning. I only seek to know you more. To love you more. To please you more. I lay this request at your feet, along with my life.
In Jesus Name. In Jesus Name. In Jesus Name.
Amen

🍒 Okay – lets read it again but we can’t cherry pick scripture, so we have to go back and read the whole passage (with the help of The Holy Spirit – not Google) in its entirety. This is the only way to rightly divide Gods Word.

BUCKLE UP – HERES WHERE WE DIG IN AND GET ALL BEREAN 😬

Lets backup a few verses…

✝️ The Betrayal and Arrest in Gethsemane

Mark 14:43-52
43 And immediately, while He was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, with a great multitude with swords and clubs, came from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders. 44 Now His betrayer had given them a signal, saying, “Whomever I kiss, He is the One; seize Him and lead Him away safely.”

45 As soon as he had come, immediately he went up to Him and said to Him, “Rabbi, Rabbi!” and kissed Him.

46 Then they laid their hands on Him and took Him. 47 And one of those who stood by drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear.

48 Then Jesus answered and said to them, “Have you come out, as against a robber, with swords and clubs to take Me? 49 I was daily with you in the temple teaching, and you did not seize Me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled.”

🔑 (( REMEMBER THE WORD ROBBER ))

50 Then they all forsook Him and fled.

51 Now a certain young man followed Him, having a linen cloth thrown around his naked body. And the young men laid hold of him, 52 and he left the linen cloth and fled from them naked.

🔑(( REMBER THE WORD FLED AND NAKED ))

Hey, hold up. I see something…

🔐 THE KEY THAT UNLOCKS THIS MYSTERY IS BACK IN VERSE 49!

Jesus said: “BUT THE SCRIPTURES MUST BE FULFILLED.”

This verse about the naked boy is a FULFILLMENT of some PROPHECY IN SCRIPTURE. 😱

📖 It’s Old Testament Time!

Our journey starts in Genesis, then we jump to Amos, then back to Isaiah and it all wraps up in Revelation!

God is The Beginning and The End.
The Alpha and The Omega.
We must look in THE BEGINNING and THE END!

✝️ So lets start in GENESIS

🔑 Genesis 3:7-10

7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were NAKED; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves coverings.

8 And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and Adam and his wife hid themselves (( REMEMBER THEY ARE FLEEING FROM )) from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. ((REMEMBER GARDEN))

9 Then the Lord God called to Adam and said to him, “Where are you?”

10 So he said, “I heard Your voice in the garden, and I was afraid because I was NAKED ; and I hid myself.”

🔑 KEY IDEAS

* Adam and Even were in the garden of Eden. The naked young man was in the garden of Gethsemane.

* Adam was naked running from God. This boy was naked when he was running from Jesus…or was he fleeing from the guards??? Hmmm….

✝️ Genesis 3:21-22

21 Also for Adam and his wife the Lord God made tunics of skin, and clothed them.

22 Then the Lord God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of Us, to know good and evil. And now, lest he put out his hand and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live forever”—

🔑 KEY TAKEAWAYS

*Adam and Eve attempted to hide their sin from God.

*God sees all – we can’t hide sin from God.

*Adam and Eve couldn’t cover their sin. Despite their fig leaves, their sin was exposed. Only God and God alone, could cover them.

* Their tunics were made of animal skins sacrificed by God. ‘This was with the first blood sacrifice.

* We see a similarity in that the naked boy wore a linen tunic but his seems worthless?? Hmmm….

* As the boy ran off – Jesus was taken by the Roman soldiers. He was the final and perfect blood sacrifice for our sin. JESUS would soon be naked and exposed – for our sins and would shed HIS blood to cover them.

Lets keep searching….

✝️ AMOS
Flip to Amos 2:13-16 for confirmation that we are on the right track. Scripture always proves scripture and God always confirms His word.

In the book of Amos God is speaking to Israel however, Israel is often (not always) used as the prophetic image of Gods church. We are the church.

🔑 13 “Behold, I am weighed down by you, As a cart full of sheaves is weighed down. 14 Therefore flight shall perish from the swift, The strong shall not strengthen his power, Nor shall the mighty deliver himself; 15 He shall not stand who handles the bow, The swift of foot shall not escape, Nor shall he who rides a horse deliver himself. 16 The most courageous men of might shall flee naked in that day,” Says the Lord.

Okay – now let’s read that again…

13 “Behold, I am weighed down by you, As a cart full of sheaves is weighed down.”

🤔 What are sheaves? Sheaves are grains of wheat that grow out of the earth – that have been cut down. Ok – but what does that mean?

Let’s look at Isaiah 53:1-12

Who has believed what he has heard from us? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed? For he grew up before him like a young plant, and like a root out of dry ground; he had no form or majesty that we should look at him, and no beauty that we should desire him. He was despised and rejected by men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his stripes we are healed.

*I would certainly say Jesus was weighed down by us, our transgressions, our iniquities and our chastisement. The cutting down of the sheaves represents God’s wrath and judgement. That wrath and judgement was put upon His Son.

(Lets go back to Amos and the next verse)
14 Therefore flight shall perish from the swift
The strong shall not strengthen his power, Nor shall the mighty deliver himself.

There is no way to avoid or run from this judgement and wrath. God is Holy. God has to exercise justice. We are powerless to save ourselves. So God – in his great, GREAT mercy – sent His Only Son to stand in our place.

15 He shall not stand who handles the bow. The swift of foot shall not escape. Nor shall he who rides a horse deliver himself.

The Roman guards are the images of what our sin has caused by us following the god of this world. Satan – the very small g false god.

🤭 We can also see that God is referring to the end times as the anti-christ in the first seal of Revelation comes on a horse with a bow.

✝️ Revelation 6:2
2 And I looked, and behold, a white horse. He who sat on it had a bow; and a crown was given to him, and he went out conquering and to conquer

BUT – Satan will also NOT defeat Jesus.

(We are now back at the last verse of Amos 2:16)
16 The most courageous men of might SHALL FLEE NAKED in that day,” Says the Lord.

* In That Day = The Day of The Lord = Jesus Triumphant FINAL Return 🙌🏼

💡 The Lord is telling His believers, the church that Satan is defeated. HE WILL SAVE HIS CHURCH – HE WILL RESCUE HIS PEOPLE…but that the wrath we have earned…will be poured out on His sinless Son. 😭😭😭

⭐️ But wait there’s the naked guy in Amos 2:16

Ummmm…but I still don’t know why his cloth tunic thing got torn off???

Let’s keep searching!

✝️ REVELATION –

Revelation 16:15
15 “Behold, I am coming as a thief. Blessed is he who watches, and keeps his garments, lest he walk naked and they see his shame.”

Let’s read that again….

✝️ Revelation 16:15
15 “Behold, I am coming AS A THIEF 👈🏼
Blessed is he who watches, and keeps his garments, lest he walk NAKED and they see his SHAME.”

HEY REMEMBER WHAT JESUS SAID BACK IN MARK 14: 48???

Mark 14:48 “Have you come out, as against A ROBBER, with swords and clubs to take Me?”

and…the naked guy was there and lost his garments! This fits I think??? 🤔

💡 And what does Jesus say to the Lukewarm Church in Revelation 3 about nakedness?

✝️ Revelation 3:17-18
17 Because you say, ‘I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing’—and do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and NAKED – 18 I counsel you to buy from Me gold refined in the fire, that you may be rich; and WHITE GARMENTS, that you may be CLOTHED, that the shame of your NAKEDNESS may not be revealed; and anoint your eyes with eye salve, that you may see.

*They are told to cover their nakedness… but cover it with what???

✒️ SIDE NOTE: People use this scripture to suggest that people can lose their salvation. I believe Jesus is telling this Lukewarm church that they NEVER were saved and to REPENT AND BELIEVE IN HIM AND HIM ALONE before it’s to late.

But when you’re saved, God reveals another one of His beautiful promises to you!

❤️ John 10:28
I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand.

That such a GREAT PROMISE!!

Let’s ensure we double check it though…

The word “NO ONE” in Greek means…NO ONE!

And just in case you want something else to make you breathe easy, we can rest in Romans 8:38-39.

38 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, 39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

WE ARE THE BRIDE AND JESUS IS THE BRIDEGROOM – NO ONE HAS THE POWER OR AUTHORITY TO TAKE US FROM HIM 👰🏼

✝️Isaiah 61:10
10 I will greatly rejoice in the Lord,
My soul shall be joyful in my God;
For HE has CLOTHED ME with the GARMENTS of SALVATION,
HE has covered me with the ROBE of RIGHTEOUSNESS,
As a bridegroom decks himself with ornaments,
And as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.

WE ARE CLOTHED IN SALVATION AND RIGHTEOUSNESS! WE ARE DRESSED FOR THE MARRIAGE SUPPER OF THE LAMB – BECAUSE OF JESUS – WE ARE NAKED IN SHAME NO MORE!!!! 😭😭😭❤️

But wait – We still don’t know why the guy lost his tunic cloth thing? 😵

We missed a key word. The boy in Mark 14: 51-52 wasn’t wearing just ANY cloth tunic. God was SPECIFIC about the fabric this tunic was made from.

✝️ 51 Now a certain young man followed Him, having a LINEN cloth thrown around his naked body. And the young men laid hold of him, 52 and he left the LINEN cloth and fled from them naked.

Its a CLOTH TUNIC MADE FROM LINEN.

What does linen signify in the Bible? Linen was used for the sacred vestments worn by the priests. The word is from a root signifying “separation.”

BUT WHAT ELSE WAS MADE FROM LINEN CLOTH??

The veil in the Holy of Holies! The veil was the physical representation of what separated a Holy God from sinful mankind. This was absolutely necessary because sin separates us from God (Isaiah 59:2).

The linen cloth was TORN away!!! The guard that tried to grab the boy TO PERSECUTE HIM – BUT HE COULDN’T TOUCH HIM!!!

ONLY THE LINEN CLOTH WAS TORN – THE ORIGINAL SIN FROM THE GARDEN COULDN’T HOLD HIM- THE NAKED YOUNG BOY…HE RAN FREE!!!

That boy is YOU!

That boy is ME!!!

😭✝️❤️

A very long but BEAUTIFUL explanation of the naked boy who lost his linen cloth.

So in a nutshell…

The naked boy is pointing to us and our salvation! 😭

Gods people are clothed in HIS SONS RIGHTEOUSNESS. Not because of any good WE’VE DONE – BUT BECAUSE OF WHAT HE DID FOR US!. Fig leaves won’t cut it! The linen tunic no longer needs to cover it! It’s not about how good and holy we are. ITS ABOUT HOW GOOD AND HOLY HE IS! We never have to stand before God, naked and ashamed. Jesus CHOSE US – WE DIDN’T CHOOSE HIM! Love tore the veil. We come before Him as HIS SON because HIS SON, OUR SAVIOR went to the cross as US!!

JESUS MAKES US WORTHY TO BE CALLED RIGHTEOUS!!! 😭❤️

📖 What is Biblical righteousness??

The Biblical definition of RIGHTEOUSNESS is this…

Because of Jesus death and resurrection we have SALVATION! We become innocent, faultless, and guiltless because He is innocent, faultless, and guiltless. At the point of salvation we receive The Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit sanctifies us. SANCTIFICATION is a life long, on going process that changes our way of thinking, feeling, and acting. We strive, with the guidance of The Holy Spirit to become full conformed to the will of God. ❤️

THANK YOU JESUS FOR ANSWERING MY QUESTION!

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU FOR BEING MY SACRIFICE UPON THE CROSS. 😭😭😭

Glory to God
24 Now to Him who is able to keep [a]you from stumbling,
And to present you faultless
Before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy,
25 To [b]God our Savior,
[c]Who alone is wise,
Be glory and majesty,
Dominion and [d]power,
Both now and forever.
Amen.
