Food addiction, as with any addiction, puts it’s victim in chains of bondage; it is impossible to be completely freed by our own doing.
This is what I learned after years of suffering and crying out to God for deliverance:
If you despair about your food addiction, set apart periods of prayer and fasting, so that the Lord can give you strength and leading. This was key for me, as the Lord was able to open my eyes as to what action to take in order to be delivered.
The Lord delivers, but it is up to us to stay delivered
Now here’s what surprised me most: many of us – as did I – cry out to God for deliverance, and He answers by giving us power over food (i.e. when you go on a diet and succeed for a few days, that is Him delivering you), but then we fall back into sin because we don’t realise that we can never touch the “unclean” food again – ever, or we are likely to be set off again, just as it is with a drug or alcohol addiction.
While only God can set us free from the sin of food addition, it is our responsibility to stay delivered by abstaining completely from those substances that trigger us.
This is true for drug addicts, alcoholics, and it is true for food addicts.
Staying delivered takes a firm inner resolution
It takes a firm inner resolution to decide you will never touch those trigger foods again – that being delivered is more important than the fleeting taste of that substance.
Commit to never consuming those things that make you sin again. It takes a firm inner resolution to make this type of commitment. You must be unwavering. You must not entertain even for a few seconds, that you will ever again eat or drink that offending thing.
Deal with the root cause first
But before you get to that point, as did I, the root cause of food addiction needs to be dealt with before real deliverance takes place.
You have to understand what made you turn to food in the first place.
Treat food addiction as habitual sin
Food addiction must be treated as a habitual sin; a stronghold, even if the addiction never started out as a sin.
Don’t underestimate the seriousness of your food addiction as sin, to God, to yourself, to your loved ones.
Repent for making food an idol.
Ask the Lord daily to help you make the right food choices. Psalm 119:9 – guarding yourself with scripture to control the thinking to resist the initial impulses of the flesh. Must be completely guarded with the word of God. Meditate on the word of God.
Resist the first rising of the flesh (when you are tempted). Stop it at conception, not at the birth (the actual eating).
Get enough good nutrition to stop the cravings
In order to conquer food addiction, you need the help of the Lord first and foremost, but you also need to get onto a way of eating that provides enough nutrition in order to help you resist your trigger foods – lots of fruit and veg and raw veg, nuts, legumes.
Raw food is good, as it helps stop overeating.
Each of us have different triggers. For example, I must never again drink tea with cow’s milk, or I won’t want tea without that milk again.
Make a list of what foods trigger you into overeating or wanting junk foods, and then be prepared to give them up forever.
After all – what do you want more? To conquer food addiction, or to be able to eat everything you want? Isn’t life more precious than food?
