God’s Second Greatest Gift to You: The Renewal of Your Mind

Why is the renewal of your mind God’s second greatest gift?

Well, His first and greatest gift to you is your salvation. His second greatest gift to you is changing how you think so that your life can change. Where you used to experience failure, you can start experiencing victory.

Just take a moment right now to consider the areas of your life that you would like to have changed….

Perhaps you keep going into relationships only to get hurt over and over again.

Or you have a problem with drinking too much.

Or your kids treat you badly. Or you keep getting passed over for promotions…

Renewing your mind changes the results you get in life.

Here’s the verse this is based on: “I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind.” – Romans 12:1-2

Thoughts lead to beliefs.

Beliefs determine action.

Action leads to behaviour.

Behaviour leads to habits.

Habits produce success or failure.

When our thinking is changed, our beliefs are changed, our actions are changed, and our life is changed.

But we are powerless to transform our own minds, because well, we don’t have the ability for it because our thinking is still warped from before we first come to Jesus.

Now let’s just get real here: some Christians lives never change. The reason for this is that they keep living life on their own terms. They may stay saved but there is no power of God in their lives. Because God can’t work in some situations. Not that He can’t but rather that you have to be open to Him to work in your life.

So if you want a changed life, you need to do some things:

#1: Spend quiet time with God

When you draw near to God, He draws near to you. (James 4:8) This aligns us and leads to transformation. Check out this scripture: When Moses came down from Mount Sinai with the two tablets of the covenant law in his hands, he was not aware that his face was radiant because he had spoken with the LORD. – Exodus 34:29 Spending time with God will light up your heart!

#2: Confess your sins

Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal your sins to you so that you can confess them and forget ‘em. You’ve got to repent so that the Lord can wash you clean, but there’s another purpose: when you become aware of your weaknesses, you develop self-awareness which is one of the first steps to a healthy mind.

#3: Examine areas of your life that need to be tossed

Ask the Lord to show you what areas of your life you need to sacrifice.

For instance, some music may keep you suppressed because of the words used. It may give you false desires, like a desire to be in love, but being in love with another person may not be what you really need at this point in your life. So things like bad music, bad movies and so on, will block you.

Allow Him to show you what areas to let go of and then obey.

#4: Read the Bible

The Bible allows you to learn the character of God.

Without even realising it, the Holy Spirit uses it to saturate your mind with Jesus-thinking, which is perfect thinking. Here’s a verse to back it up: “All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction and for training in righteousness, so that everyone who belongs to God may be proficient, equipped for every good work.” – 2 Timothy 3:16-17
